Planting Seeds for Success: Cross-Pollination Strategies for Online Instructors

Student success in online course discussion assignments depends on not only understanding the learning material but also developing fundamental academic skills needed for future course success. While online instructors often create videos focused on course content, and institutions might provide general skill-building resources or access to tutoring programs, there is little overlap between the two. This causes a disconnection in the learning process, leaving students uncertain about how to apply academic skills—such as critical thinking, structured writing, and basic grammatical syntax—within their course assignments. Without explicit guidance, students may complete assignments without fully grasping how to improve their work.
